Google has announced the release of three new Pixel phones to be released in the coming months: Pixel 4A, Pixel 5 and Pixel 4A 5G. The first of these new devices will be released by the end of August, with the other two set to ship this fall.

With these new phones, app developers will want to ensure their apps are optimized and ready for all that’s to come.

New Device Details

The three new phones announced continue the Pixel 4 series and move on to the 5. While the 4A has experienced some delays leading up to its official release, it will still be available before the Pixel 5 and 4A 5G and at a lower price point.

Pixel 4A & 4a 5G

The Pixel 4A will be available for $349 and includes:

  • A 12.2-megapixel optically stabilized camera on the back and 8-megapixel sensor on the front
  • A 5.8-inch display and 1080p OLED screen
  • Safety features like car crash detection
  • Speech-to-text live call captions
  • 128GP storage
  • Snapdragon 730G processor

The 4A 5G, which is coming out in fall, will cost $4.99. Early buzz suggests it will feature a larger screen and second camera lens, but more importantly, it’s designed for 5G support.

Pixel 5

The Pixel 5, which will be available this fall, will also be built to support 5G. While little information has been revealed about the Pixel 5 so far, we know it will feature a Snapdragon 765G processor and will support Android 11 at launch.

More information will be revealed down the line as the release gets closer.

What App Developers Should Do

As there’s little known about the Pixel 5 or 4A 5G at the moment, we can focus on the upcoming release of the Pixel 4A. When a new device launches, app developers must be sure that their apps are optimized for users on the new phones.

This will include testing the app, video and screenshots to ensure they look right on each screen size. The devices will have different processors, which could impact how certain apps perform on each phone.

Additionally, developers may find that new features added to the devices are similar to existing apps. The Pixel 4A’s crash detection or speech-to-text captions may create built-in competition for apps that provide those functions.

In cases like this, it’s important to use App Store Optimization to show users why the app in question is worth downloading.

Showcase the benefits it can provide that the built-in functionality doesn’t. Does the crash detection also record information for insurance? Can the speech-to-text transcriptions handle multiple languages?

These key differentiators should be utilized in your ASO, including the description, video and screenshots. Providing a value proposition greater than the “default” will help your app stand out amongst the competition no matter what device it’s on.

Overall

The release of a new device is important for customers and app developers alike. With three new devices on the horizon, app developers will want to work hard to ensure their apps run well on all devices and are up to date with the latest functionality they can provide.

Combining tested performance with App Store Optimization can help provide the best results for developers and customers alike.

The Pixel 4A is available for pre-order and will be available in stores on August 20th. The Pixel 5 and 4A 5G do not have a confirmed release date but are slated for this fall.
