As the app economy continues to grow, overall app profits consistently increase. Apple recently announced record App Store revenue from 2019’s holiday season, clearly indicating a growth in app profits for the company. Developers wanting to make the most of the growing app economy will need App Store Optimization to compete for the largest cuts of the profit.

App Profit Growth

Apple recently announced that customers spent a record $1.42 billion on the App Store between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. This is an increase of 16% from 2018’s $1.22 billion.

Apple also announced that customers spent $386 million on New Year’s Day alone, 20% more than last year. That sets a new single-day record for App Store revenue.

This brings the total app profit earned by developers to $155 billion. Most notable is that a quarter of those earnings ($38.75 billion) were from 2019 alone.

Top Earners

In addition to 2019’s app profits, Apple included a list of the top ten apps and mobile games. YouTube, Instagram and Snapchat continue to dominate the top free iPhone apps, while TikTok has claimed the #4 spot. Top free games include Mario Kart Tour, Color Bump 3D and Aquapark.io.

For the top paid apps and games, Facetune ranks #1 for paid apps, followed by HotSchedules and Dark Sky Weather. Minecraft remains the top paid iPhone game, with Heads Up! And Plague Inc. as #2 and 3.

Why ASO Matters

With app profits growing significantly year by year, app developers will continue to compete for a greater portion of those profits. To gain the most users and purchases, they’ll want to appear in the top spots of search results.

App Store Optimization is the key to growth and success in the App Store. With proper ASO, an app’s keyword rankings, CTR and conversions can improve. With more money being spent on apps, app profits are likely to keep improving in 2020. Developers need to use any edge they can to help keep their apps competitive, and App Store Optimization is a great edge to have.

There are many ways that apps earn profits, whether through installation costs, advertisements or in-app purchases. 2019’s app profit growth continues the trend of increasing consumer spending, so developers wanting to enjoy those profits should optimize their apps.
