Apple’s WWDC conference has begun, kicking off with a keynote that covered major upcoming news and announcements. As anticipated, the company has revealed new iOS and macOS versions, as well as news that’s vital for app developers.
Back in March 2017, Google announced the Android Automotive OS. This Android operating system is designed to provide easy access to apps for driving, such as navigation and communications apps, without distracting drivers. Android Automotive OS apps can sync with a car’s built-in infotainment system, connecting the app and car. Now, two years after the initial announcement, Google is encouraging developers to begin creating Android Auto apps – which means that they’ll need App Store Optimization to succeed in the Play Store.
As 2018 nears its end, it’s time to look at what has changed in the app store environment and how it will impact the future of App Store Optimization. Both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store underwent changes throughout the year, so while best practices for ASO follow the same overall concepts, the changes should be considered when planning for 2019.
When Foursquare first launched, users enjoyed checking in to their favorite locations to become its “mayor” for fun and bragging rights. As its grown, Foursquare has expanded into multiple apps – Foursquare City Guide and Foursquare Swarm. While City Guide provides travel tips and recommendations, Foursquare Swarm continues the tradition of checking in and logging the places you visit. However, is it optimized for the App Stores? In this week’s App Store Spotlight, we take a look at Foursquare Swarm.
Apple has begun a purge of gambling apps from the App Store, ensuring that only gambling apps from incorporated businesses remain. The problem? In doing so they’re eliminating all sorts of card and dice games that don’t feature gambling, as well as several apps that don’t involve gambling at all. On August 9th, Apple began removing any apps that involve “simulated gambling” and are not from verified accounts. According to the statement sent to developers:
We’re more than halfway through 2018, and the mobile market continues to grow and change. However, some trends have remained consistent and strong throughout the year. Near the end of 2017, we looked at new and growing trends. Now we’re looking at how they’ve affected today’s app ecosystem and if they’ve lasted. What are they, and how have they changed since the start of the year? App Store Optimization To call ASO a trend does little service to the importance of optimizing apps. Good ASO requires keeping up with all user trends and changes in the App Stores. There have been many changes to both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, and the best practices for ASO have changed accordingly. Ten years ago, Apple launched its App Store and reshaped the way we use mobile devices. Suffice to say, the app ecosystem has changed significantly in that time, and the app economy is on track to be worth over 6 billion by 2021. With ten years behind us and an infinite future ahead, it’s time to look back and see how the world of apps has changed.
